Vince Raikhel trained to be a classical composer prior to going to medical school. Vince is currently an Internal Medicine hospitalist at the VA in Seattle and the Director of the Clinician Educator Pathway for the Internal Medicine Residency. Vince is passionate about promoting interactive, inclusive, and efficient learning. His current medical education endeavors include improving formative feedback delivered to trainees by faculty through a program of near peer observation with paired coaching as well as the development of new simulation-based sessions. Vince enjoys growing sunflowers, building with LEGO,  making pizza, admiring really old trees, and having pillow fights with his three kids.
Introduction to Curricular Design
This session focuses on understanding and applying Kern’s six step model for the development of a medical education curricula. Included are additional efforts to integrate equity, both in content and teaching strategies, into the process. Learners apply the model to a curricular idea they are developing. This has historically been presented as two sessions.
Introduction to Learning Theory
Participants will develop a greater an understanding of the use and importance of learning theory, as well as an introduction to several foundational learning theories including constructivism, social learning theory, cognitivism, experiential learning theory, and behavioralism.
Teaching on Rounds
Focuses on understanding the opportunities and challenges to teaching on rounds. We discuss and practice ways to effectively teach in four manners on rounds: teaching knowledge, giving feedback, intentional modelling, and guided reflection.
Survey Design for Medical Education
Participants discuss the strategies for selecting your sample cohort, a framework for survey design, and survey implementation strategies.
Delivering Effective Feedback
This highly interactive session covers the skills needed for the delivery of effective formative feedback. Participants practicing feedback delivery in several role play scenarios. We highlight the importance of using objective language to describe observed behaviors and developing collaborative actional plans with your learners.
Teaching Large Groups
Several techniques for optimizing large group teaching are discussed, including encouraging audience engagement, optimizing your educational strategy, and developing your voice as a presenter
Introduction to Medical Education Scholarship
Designed for individuals who are interested in medical education but have not yet engaged in medical education scholarship. The session describes categories, approaches, and techniques for producing scholarship for your med ed work.
