The Symposium features abstract presentations from the School of Medicine community. See more information below.  \nThis year’s CLIME Together Symposium will focus on the theme of Community and Collaboration in Medical Education. We are delighted to feature Dr. Anna Cianciolo as our keynote speaker. She comes to medical education with PhD training in engineering psychology (2001 – Georgia Institute of Technology)\, 12 years’ experience conducting performance-based training research and development for the U.S. Army\, and a lifelong passion for understanding the nature of expertise and its development. \nShe works at an institution that is internationally recognized for educational innovation\, where the curriculum offers a rich\, “living laboratory” for studying the social and technological aspects of medical education collaboratively with faculty and students. Her role as Editor also allows special observability on the development of scholarly expertise\, particularly the cultivation of individual voice and advancement of community understanding. Her research interests include small-group collaborative and peer-assisted learning\, clinical teaching\, learning\, and assessment\, clinical reasoning\, and scholarly professional development. \nDr. Cianciolo’s work has been funded by the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME)\, the Harvard Macy Foundation\, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). It has been published in Academic Medicine\, Medical Education\, and Medical Teacher\, among other journals. She has served one and a half terms as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Central Region Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) Chair of the Medical Education Scholarship\, Research\, and Evaluation (MESRE) Section. She was honored as a CGEA Laureate in 2021 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 2025 and has been recognized by my school as Outstanding Scholar (2016) and Outstanding Educator (2018) and by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) as a Miriam Friedman Ben-David New Educator (2014). Ultimately\, her professional goal is to improve medical education by doing work that encourages and empowers medical educators to practice reflectively and\, in so doing\, make their world a better place for themselves\, their learners\, and their patients.

SUMMARY:CLIME Work in Progress: Feasibility of WBA-based approach to teaching and assessing communication skills within clerkships using VitalTalk methodology
DESCRIPTION:CLIME Work in Progress: Building Expertise of UW Rehabilitation Medicine Professionals in Adaptive Sports\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Christopher Jons\, MD\, Physician Director\, WWAMI Missoula \nSusan Merel\, MD\, FACP\, Professor\, Medicine \nAbstract: Serious illness communication skills need to be learned and practiced by all physicians and trainees in order to provide compassionate\, patient-centered care. Despite the rapid growth of the field of palliative care as a clinical discipline and area of academic research over the last few decades\, significant gaps remain in the availability of palliative care specialists\, especially in rural areas\, as well as evidence-based guidelines for best practices in teaching these skills in undergraduate medical education. The vast majority of WWAMI clerkship faculty lack training in serious illness communication\, so teaching our students requires teaching our faculty as well. We propose the development and integration of a serious illness communication skills curriculum into 4 clerkships in Missoula\, consisting of the following components: \n1) Training up faculty in these core skills using the evidence-based methodology VitalTalk \n2) Providing a curriculum for students participating in the clerkships \n3) Development of a novel WBA assessing an entrustable professional activity involving two core components of serious illness communication (responding to emotion and delivering a headline).
