DESCRIPTION:Conversation Cafe: Competency-Based Education | Assessment in Foundations\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Friday\, September 18\, 2026 | 11:00am-12:00pm (AK)\, 12:00pm-1:00pm (PT)\, 1:00pm-2:00pm (MT) \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Heather McPhillips\, MD\, UWSoM Vice Dean of Academic Affairs \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				While Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) is often discussed in the clinical learning environment\, the Foundations phase at UWSOM offers important opportunities to help students build habits of a master adaptive learner that include recognizing what they do not yet know\, making a plan to learn it\, seeking and using feedback\, and adjusting their approach over time. In the Foundations phase\, this means helping students practice curiosity\, motivation\, growth mindset\, and resilience early — not only so they master foundational science\, but so they learn how to keep adapting as physicians as science evolves.  It also offers some yet untapped opportunities in our courses to more holistically assess our students and coach them on key competencies such as interpersonal and communication skills\, professional behaviors\, practice-based learning and improvement\, and systems-based practice. \n			\n				Register

DESCRIPTION:Conversation Cafe: Five Miles In and Two Thousand Feet Up: Early Providers Navigating Transitions into Rural Medicine\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Thursday\, December 3\, 2026 | 11:00am-12:00pm (AK)\, 12:00pm-1:00pm (PT)\, 1:00pm-2:00pm (MT) \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Ashley Dennis\, PhD \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Join us for a conversation cafe featuring Ashley Dennis\, PhD\, who will discuss this CLIME-funded research project exploring how recently graduated physicians\, nurse practitioners\, and physician assistants experience the transition into rural clinical practice. Using longitudinal interviews conducted at two time points over providers’ first three years\, the study drew on Jindal-Snape’s Multiple and Multi-dimensional Transitions Theory and Gordon et al.’s Transition-to-Trained-Doctor model to identify what helps early providers build the support systems they need to thrive in rural healthcare settings. \nThe findings are presented in a striking format: a comic anthology that visualizes composite narratives from the interview data\, making the complexity of these transitions accessible to a wider audience\, including the very communities that support providers as they settle into rural practice. \nCome hear directly from Dr. Dennis about the project\, the process of translating interview data into visual storytelling\, and what it means for how we support the next generation of rural providers. \n			\n				Register
